Who says ice cube trays have to be boring!
Silicon isn’t just for baking pans anymore. We found these at Amazon but I’ve also seen them at BevMo and Total Wine. You can also find open tray versions just about anywhere.
The larger one is a one-at-a-time version and the small sphere version freezes four at a time. The large size is a 2.5 inch sphere. The smaller size is a 1.75 inch sphere.
I’ll take a day or two to freeze a bunch and save them in a Ziploc bag. When we are packing for a trip I make sure they are not forgotten. For you lucky full-timers, they don’t take up much freezer space. I like that they take longer to melt and keep the drink cold without watering it down too fast.
They are also a conversation piece. Yes, ice cubes can be the center of attention, especially when it’s in a festive cocktail.
I use this handy little funnel that I got with a pepper mill for filling the molds. I have a steady hand but that hole seems so small! Using the funnel is way better than water, water everywhere.
Freeze for several hours. I used a little food color so the sphere was easier to see and photograph.
Separate the molds and viola! Fun and fancy ice cubes!
