Moab sits in the middle of nature’s playground in Southeastern Utah. There are two national parks and one state park within miles of the center of town. There are several campgrounds to choose from in all price ranges and on our last trip, we chose Portal RV Resort.
Portal bills itself as Moab’s RV & vacation home destination. We’ve seen lots of people rave about it and knew it was time to try it for ourselves. It’s an ownership RV park where you can own your little piece of paradise and let the resort rent your space out while you’re away. Win-win.
We were on the tail end of our Jeeping vacation and stayed two nights at Portal, next time our stay will be longer. There is at least a week’s worth of off-road activities around Moab and two days was not enough.
We made our reservations for a pull-through in the ownership section. Our home base was a long and wide space with a cute little cabana. We belong to the Tiffin Jeep Adventures page on Facebook and recognized our neighboring RV from a conversation between members the day before. Yeah, we were going to make new friends! We gathered at their RV later that night and talked for a long time while their kids made s’mores.
Check-in was a breeze, they were very efficient and nice. Just like our arrival in Breckenridge, this was a quick set up and dog walk before we hit the trails. We were going to cram as much into our two days as humanly possible.
The entire campground is very nice. There is a large pool with jacuzzi and even a swimming pond. We haven’t seen one of those in a campground before. Behind us was a good sized koi pond. Record heat was following us this trip and at 105 degrees, I felt for those fish. The regular section of the campground was filled with nice and level gravel spots, about half of them pull through. It’s a small enough campground where you can get around easily and also meet other campers. Nobody is too far from the pool or swimming pond.
The sunsets were amazing. I must have taken twenty pictures during our two nights. We had nothing obstructing our view of the nearby mesas. I bet that view is spectacular in the winter with a little coating of snow at the top.
And just like that it was time to set our alarm for the long drive home. As we pulled out the sun was just coming up on the east side of the highway. I was sad to be leaving so soon, but we will surely be back. Maybe not in 105 degree heat because we get that too often at home. I’m hoping for a long pants and jacket kinda stay, a girl can dream.
Until next time Portal. You too, Moab.
