In the file of “great stopover places” sits USA RV Park in Gallup, NM.
Our first time here was on our way to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in our Winnebago Class C. We’d worked all day then hit the road. Gallup was as far as we wanted to go for the night so we already had our reservation. It was long past dark by the time we pulled in. I sure liked the easy access to the freeway. We welcomed the huge pull-through sites even though we weren’t towing anything. We got level, plugged in the for night and zonked in bed. We didn’t see what a great place it was until the next morning. The spaces were long and wide, each with a picnic table and some spaces with a shade tree.
A great perk of these long sites is we don’t have to disconnect our Jeep. And, since the sites are good and level, there’s no twisting of our tow equipment. Ask me how I know the importance of that, let’s just say it was an expensive lesson.
Fast forward to this spring on our way home from the FMCA Rally in Perry, GA. We routed on Interstate 40 coming home so we could stop in Norman, OK and see our oldest son Jeff. I’d route all of our trips through Norman if I could.
Both of our stays have been met with cheerful and friendly staff. Friendly on the phone and in person which makes me smile and starts our stay off on the right note. They offer many different types of discounts, including special ones for Veterans. Active duty military personnel get the best discount of all, a free stay! The park is on historic Route 66 and they’ve named the streets in the park after states the road traveled through. Every time we are here I think of my parents driving through town on their way out to their new adventure in California from Pennsylvania.
There are nice amenities here as well. A year-round heated pool, a dog run and a covered activity area.
The park also make a good home base for exploring this area of the desert southwest. The park is a short distance from spectacular national and tribal parks including Mesa Verde, El Morro, Window Rock, Zuni, Four Corners, Monument Valley, and the Painted Desert.
