Our home base for the last leg of our fun fall RZR trip was Sand Hollow State Park.
It is a new park in the Utah State Park system being dedicated in 2003. The park includes a reservoir and fun trails situated on Sand Mountain in Hurricane, UT and was a great jumping off point for our riding adventures.
As we’ve found with many state parks, the sites were long and wide. Long enough for us to fit our RV and 14-foot trailer with room to park the RZR in front of the coach. Our spot was on the hill so we had a great view of the lake. Our cousins Keith and Linda set up in a long pull-through spot. We couldn’t get sites next to each other so we each got a good little walk going from site to site.
We could have stayed a week, there’s that much to do just at the park. The lake is on the smaller side but still large enough to waterski. We saw lots of people fishing. The weather was perfect for early October and people took advantage of the sun in the large beach area.
The campground has 50 spaces, 27 that are pull-through with lots of space in between. There are two restroom/shower buildings; one between site 8 and 45 and one between site 14 and 30. The sites were very clean which is one thing I really like about almost every state park we’ve been to.
We were in site 28 at the top of the hill Keith and Linda were in site 50 closer to the exit. Each site comes with a shaded table and a nice sized fire pit. Unfortunately, our fire pit was right outside the door. It would have been perfect at the back of the site with a view looking west toward the sunset. We used the fire pit at their site, we love a campfire at the end of a fun day.
The southern end of the lake is where all the UTV action is. We had a great time exploring the hills and even ran the RZR along the beach. If you forgot a water or sand toy, have no fear. Sand Hollow Rentals at the southern end of the lake rents kayaks and paddle boards as well as ATVs and UTVs. They even offer guided tours!
It wasn’t a long drive from Kanab so we had plenty of time to unload the RZRs and start exploring. Mark and Keith wanted to climb that giant sand hill but, Linda and I wanted to explore the campground. Yippee, we won. We walked almost the entire campground then headed over to the water. It felt good to take my shoes off and walk in the wet sand along the shoreline.
The lake was a hub of activity during the day and cleared out early enough to have the beach to ourselves. Each evening we walked down to the water and one evening we had a rousing game of Molkky in the sand.
This is a place we’ll come back to and our choice of stay will be here at the state park.
