Arizona has won awards for its state park system. We’ve stayed at several state park campgrounds and wholeheartedly agree.
One of our favorites is Alamo Lake State Park. It’s 83 miles northwest of Wickenburg, near the town of Wenden.
It’s a bird watchers paradise. The lake is a favorite of fisherman, knows as the best bass fishing in the entire state. We like it for the hundreds of miles of fun trails.
Our first visit was 2017 and we’ve been back almost every year since.
As with every Arizona State Park we’ve camped at, the spaces are large with extra space in between sites. You can choose from long back-in sites or what I call sideways pull-throughs. The pull-throughs parallel the camp road with your patio away from the road. These are coveted sites and book first. We like to stay in C Loop because it has direct trail access.
There are five different loops, A-E. A and D Loops are primitive and the least expensive. 99 sites have hookups, most of those are water and 30-amp electric with a small number of 50-amp full hookups. Walking the loop is a great way to get your steps in and meet fellow campers.
Each site comes with a large picnic table, fire pit and this hook. There’s been much debate on what it’s used for. Mark and I say it’s for hanging a lantern. Some other ideas are quite outlandish but I know we are right.
They also have four camping cabins. These cozy little cabins are appointed with two sets of bunk beds, table and chairs and both heat and air conditioning. You’ll need to bring your own sheets and towels. These are situated near the restroom/shower building.
Many sites have a view of the lake. Every site can take in the beautiful Arizona sunsets.
Be sure to stop at the dam. The views are great.
Alamo Lake State Park is off the beaten path but is also 100% worth the drive. We hope to see you there!
We love Alamo Lake! So many great family memories were made there.
We live in AZ and also love the state parks. We’ve never been to this one, thanks for the introduction, we’ll have to try it out.
