The next FMCA Rally will be here in Redmond a few weeks. We camped near the fairgrounds in 2017 for a family wedding. All of our activities were wedding related, we squeezed in an afternoon in Bend before we had to head home. Reading up on the fun things to do in and near Redmond, I’m excited to return.
The town of Redmond, Oregon is a high desert town, located on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. It was founded in 1904 by two pioneers, Frank and Josephine Redmond. The town became official on July 6, 1910. It’s grown since those early days as a farming town.
Today, Redmond is known as the hub for outdoor activities in Central Oregon that include biking, watersports and caving. Dry Canyon Park runs through the city with lots of things to do. You can hike, play disc golf and more. The area is a mountain biking mecca. There are lots of trails to choose from covering all abilities.
My cousin’s son and daughter in law live in the area when he’s not saving the power grid. They are adventurous like us but since they are still young, they can be extra adventurous!
Floating the Deschutes
I can tell you this is a fun way to spend a day and fun for all ages! Most people float in nearby Bend. Rental tubes are readily available. You’ll float past the saw mills, imagining yourself as a tree that’s floated down for milling. There is a short rapid area off the to left that you can float through. Or, like us because our time was short, slow yourself down as much as you can with your eyes fixed on the rafters and kayakers as they go through the rapids.
Old Mill District
Staying in Bend, you can walk through the Old Mill District. The old mills have been turned into shops and restaurants. You can also read the history of the area from birth to boom to bust. It’s fascinating. Be sure to walk along the river and through the tunnels, many are painted by local artists.
Redmond Heritage Walking Tour
This is a self-guided tour detailing the town’s history. You can download the map from here.
Smith Rock State Park
You’ll have miles of views, hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing. Golden eagles nest in the park which means you may see some!
Redmond Downtown Park Splash Pad
This is a perfect place to let the little ones splash around and have fun. The splash pad is the main attraction at the park that also includes large grass areas, picnic tables, basketball courts and more.
